1. Short answer
Gold is the steadier store of value; silver is the cheaper, wilder ride. With gold having fallen more than 6% in September (Reuters, 30 Sep 2026), both metals are worth a fresh look — but they play very different roles in a portfolio. Silver costs roughly one-seventieth of gold per gram, so small investors can build a meaningful position. Gold moves less violently and is easier to resell at fair value.
2. Today's per-gram prices
| Metal | Purity | Price per gram (AED) |
| Gold | 24K | 493.81 |
| Gold | 22K | 452.66 |
| Silver | 999 | 7.15 |
| Silver | 925 (sterling) | 6.61 |

3. The gold-to-silver ratio
Divide the gold price by the silver price and you get the gold-to-silver ratio — how many ounces of silver buy one ounce of gold:
- Today's ratio: ≈ 69 (493.81 ÷ 7.15). One gram of gold costs about 69 grams of silver.
- What it means: a high ratio suggests silver is relatively cheap versus gold; a low ratio suggests the opposite. It is a long-term sentiment gauge, not a buy signal on its own.
- UAE angle: because silver trades in smaller tickets, you can act on ratio thinking with a few hundred dirhams — gold needs thousands for the same percentage play.
4. Volatility: the real difference
| Factor | Gold | Silver |
| Typical swings | Smoother — safe-haven demand cushions falls | Sharper — moves roughly 2–3x as much as gold |
| Industrial demand | Mostly jewellery + investment | ~50% goes to industry (solar, electronics) — economy-linked |
| September 2026 | Down >6% for the month on rate-hike fears | Follows gold, usually with bigger moves |
| Resale liquidity in UAE | Excellent — Gold Souk dealers buy back instantly | Good, but fewer specialist silver buyers |
5. VAT and buying in the UAE
- Jewellery: both gold and silver jewellery carry 5% VAT in the UAE. Tourists can claim the VAT back on departure.
- Investment bars: investment-grade bars (999+ for gold, typically 999 for silver) are generally VAT-free — ask the dealer for a proper tax invoice stating purity.
- Making charges: these hit silver harder in percentage terms — AED 1–2 per gram in making charges is trivial on gold but meaningful on silver. Buy bars, not jewellery, for pure investment.
- Zakat: both metals count — the nisab is roughly 87.48g of gold or about 612g of silver. Use our gold zakat calculator if you hold either.
6. Who each metal suits
- Buy gold if: you want a stable long-term store of value, easy resale anywhere in the Gulf, and lower stress. Better for larger amounts and for wedding/family jewellery.
- Buy silver if: you are starting with a small budget, want higher upside potential, and can stomach bigger swings. Silver's industrial demand (solar panels, EVs) gives it a growth story gold lacks.
- Consider both: many UAE investors hold mostly gold with a smaller silver position — stability plus optionality.
Verdict: At today's prices — gold 24K at AED 493.81/g and silver 999 at AED 7.15/g — silver is the accessible way into precious metals and gold is the calmer one. If you are investing (not gifting), buy bars over jewellery, check the day's live rate, and keep the position sized to your risk appetite. Not financial advice.
FAQs
Is there VAT on silver in the UAE?
Silver jewellery carries 5% VAT like gold jewellery. Investment-grade silver bars are generally VAT-free — always ask for an invoice stating the purity.
Where can I buy silver in Dubai?
The Gold Souk in Deira and DMCC-area bullion dealers sell silver bars alongside gold. Compare per-gram premiums over spot across 2–3 shops before buying.
Is silver a good investment after gold's September fall?
Gold fell over 6% in September 2026, and silver typically moves in the same direction but more sharply. A dip can be an entry point, but silver's higher volatility cuts both ways — never invest money you can't afford to leave alone.
