Add: total = price × (1+vat). Remove: pre-tax = price/(1+vat).
A sales tax calculator estimates the tax added to a purchase price and the final total you pay at checkout. In many places the shelf price does not include sales tax, so the calculator fills in the missing number: enter the price and the tax rate, and it returns the tax amount and the grand total. Shoppers use it to check a bill, businesses use it to quote tax-inclusive prices, and travelers use it to compare costs across regions with different rates.
One fact shapes how the tool works: sales tax rates vary by place. There is no universal rate — the rate depends on the country, state, or city where the sale happens, and sometimes on the product type. This calculator therefore assumes no rate of its own; it uses whatever rate you enter, so always confirm the rate for your location before trusting the result.
The formulas are straightforward. The tax amount equals the pre-tax price multiplied by the tax rate as a decimal, and the final total equals the pre-tax price multiplied by one plus the rate. In words: tax = price × rate, and total = price × (1 + rate).
It also helps to know the difference between tax-exclusive and tax-inclusive pricing. With tax-exclusive pricing, the tag shows the base price and the tax is added at checkout — the standard setup in the United States. With tax-inclusive pricing, the tag already includes the tax, which is common elsewhere. To recover the base price from a tax-inclusive total you divide: base price = total ÷ (1 + rate).
The same arithmetic works in reverse. If you know the total you paid and the rate, the calculator can back out the pre-tax price; if you know the price and the total, it can find the implied rate. Because percentages are involved, expect tiny rounding differences — shops round the tax to the smallest currency unit, sometimes per item rather than on the subtotal.
In this example, assume an item priced at $80 with an assumed sales tax rate of 8%, entered for illustration.
The combined formula gives the same answer: total = $80 × (1 + 0.08) = $80 × 1.08 = $86.40. Checking by two routes is a good habit — when both paths agree, the arithmetic is almost certainly right.
A 5% value-added tax applied to most goods and services in the UAE since 2018.
Divide the VAT-inclusive price by 1.05 — the “Remove VAT” mode does exactly that.
